Of all the machines in a workshop, we think two deserve their own books, not just because they possess the greatest potential, but when used incorrectly, are most likely to bite back. Bill Hylton and Fred Matlack’s Woodworking with the Router comes close to being the Router Bible. This tome provides an excellent overview of routers and bits while also explaining how to build and use jigs for router tables and handheld routing. Similarly, Paul Anthony’s Complete Illustrated Guide to Tablesaws gives entry-level and experienced woodworkers the information they need to safely use this workshop workhorse and accomplish more with their saws. Both books have excellent photos and great illustrations.
Popular in the spring and summer, wooden patio swings are a great way to expand your woodworking products. During the winter months, they are popular for cuddling up on under warm blankets and a cup of hot cocoa. Patio swings only require a few wooden pallets and some rope or chain. They can be made in very little time, but are still sturdy and elegant.
If you are going to celebrate Father’s Day in a unique way, then why not try it in a less complicated way? Add a photo of you as a child and your father holding you for the first time in his arms. This would remind him of the days when you came into this world, what a wonderful feeling he would go through! Personalize it with a message explaining why he’s an idol for you. Make him feel the happiest!!

My word of advice – always check the reviews! This applies to anything you spend money on. Personally, I check the reviews on almost everything. Do I want to see a movie with my family? I check the reviews. Do I want to try a new restaurant? I check the reviews. Am I buying a new book? You guessed it, I check the reviews! You get the point – always read what other people have to say before impulsively buying a product.

I admit it. I’m not a good daughter, every year I forget what I’ve got to do on Father’s Day. If you’re in the same boat I'm in, we’re together. So, I decided to make a humble bookmark made from wood which would look elegant and decent. You will need hardwood scraps; the measurement of bookmarks is about 7-in. x 1 3/16- in. Less effort, more appreciation!

I like that you mentioned that one of the hardest parts of your business was dealing with shipping. It was nice of the customers to still leave a 5-star review even though the items broke. Starting my own woodworking company has been a dream of mine since I was 5 years old. I have loved working with my dad in his workshop as I was growing up. The material durability is something I really care about and hopefully, I can find a professional that can inspect the durability of the materials that I use.

I wanted to try my hand at making some bunkbeds for my two kids so I came across this website and decided to give it a try. The advertisement that I found gave me the website for Ted's Woodworking so when my curiosity got the better of me I clicked on to see what it was all about. Ted Mcgrath was the originator of this site and is a professional woodworker so he knows what he is talking about.
Excellent book for those like me starting out in woodwork. Describes the different joints, tools and approach to woodworking in a clear concise way. I brought an older secondhand version, so I got the hardback for the same price as a paperback. I like this because I plan to use hand tools more, but the machine tool section is a bit dated in my copy. I can only assume its been updated in later versions.
This is so inspiring! Making a clock out of wood. I’m sure the girls would love having one of these in their rooms. The clocks they have created on their own, less costly and simple! Why not research on it and start creating our own? Exciting much?! Of course, why would it not be- since a girl would enjoy playing with wood and creating something unique and useful of it? So, here’s what you will need: small wood disk, pencil, scissors, clock mechanism and AA battery, larger size clock hands (depending upon the size of your wood), wood burning tool, small foam brushes, polyurethane, power drill and drill bits, paintbrush and sandpaper.

You might be surprised at the amount of money some folks will pay to have the best products for their pets. Domesticated animals are like one’s children, after all. Besides selling pet homes and pet furniture made of wood, you can also approach other companies with your craft. Try taking your crafts to pet stores, trade shows and farms. It's best to find out what is offered in your local area and what the biggest needs of your market are.
Here’s a traditional Swedish farm accessory for gunk-laden soles. The dimensions are not critical, but be sure the edges of the slats are fairly sharp — they’re what makes the boot scraper work. Cut slats to length, then cut triangular openings on the side of a pair of 2x2s. A radial arm saw works well for this, but a table saw or band saw will also make the cut. Trim the 2x2s to length, pre-drill, and use galvanized screws to attach the slats from underneath. If you prefer a boot cleaner that has brushes, check out this clever project.
I’ll touch on craft and vendor shows as well because I know a lot of handmade businesses frequent them. I did quite a few starting out to try and get my name out locally, but they were very hit and miss. I now only do the Etsy PEI show which is twice a year and absolutely amazing with tons of sales and new social media followers that will eventually buy. It’s the right fit because it’s full of my target customers which are young women, 25-35. Most craft shows weren’t working for me because too many seniors showed up, and they didn’t seem to understand the point of my products for the most part. It’s definitely a good idea to figure out which shows are the best fit and focus on those.
This is a thorough introduction to woodworking, and a truly useful and very attractive book. It covers wood selection, woodworking techniques and setting up a home workshop, and there's a huge amount of advice on tools and tool selection/use. Space is even found for some inspirational designs to get you thinking. The content gives the impression that it has been whittled down so that every one of the 320 pages contains the essence of ten ordinary pages... it is just crammed with concise, usable information. It really is the only book of its type you'll need.

It not only looks better but it’s much easier to work with and predictable looking for the customer when they’re ordering from previous photos. Designing was a pretty simple process, but I immediately focused on making a clear color chart with lots of options for customers. There were originally 8 colors and we now have 20, and I think it’s an important advantage for a handmade product to have the ability to be customized. It’s part of what makes the higher price tag and waits time worth it to our customers. However, I’m fairly strict about not customizing outside of the options we offer. To keep things running efficiently and get lots of product out, I don’t make many custom designs or size changes to items especially during busy seasons - I think a lot of makers get caught up with this and every new design is time-consuming.

Woodworking: The Right Technique, Bob Moran (1996). This gem starts with a wink that’s explained further down on the cover: “Three Practical Ways to Do Every Job—and how to choose the one that’s right for you.” Bob introduces the main woodworking processes from dimensioning stock, to cutting dovetails, and then offers a variety of ways to get the job done using traditional hand tools, modern machinery, and an assortment of slick jigs.

In his review, Rob says, “I have been looking for a quality, but medium priced bench chisels and I finally found them in the WoodRiver® Bevel Edge Socket Chisels.   Inspired by the classic socket chisels of the past, but improved upon by using modern metals and by making some design tweaks.  The result is a chisel optimized for detailed woodworking.”

He also needs to be familiar with the zoning laws, tax laws and the legal angle of his business. Though this may sound like a lot of work, once he goes through them, he can focus on designing and creating his wooden products. This will give him the peace of mind he seeks and he will be able to create all his woodworking objects which will justify setting up his business.
A woodworking business can set itself apart from other wood shops by offering high-quality products at reasonable prices, and by educating customers about the crafting process. In-person conversations, pamphlets and even tags can be used to share with customers what work went into making a piece and why that piece is different from ones produced by competitors.
