I once read that the most successful people don’t master one skill - they are really good at 2-3 things which they can combine and then dominate the niche. This resonated with me because although some have questioned my education choices, I have a background in art, design, business, and woodworking, which almost no one else has. I’m also a woman so I have a full understanding of my target market in home decor. It’s the combination of all of this that makes my business unique, and I’m not worried about the guy next door copying me and competing.

At the risk of sounding like a sycophant, knowledge is great, whether shared from father to son or vise-versa. I would suggest, a book (or books), a DVD or perhaps (here it comes) a magazine subscription. A bit more seriously, there is so much to be gained from the knowledge and experience shared amongst crafts-people of the trade, it is a very deep well from which to draw.
This is such a cute little set. My 6 year old asked for “wood to build stuff” for his birthday and this kit was perfect. He did some of the projects and made up a couple of his own. The nails and glue are perfect for little hands. We do have to assist him with some of the nailing, but it’s definitely the perfect set for a kid that likes wood working.

It all depends on what exactly it is you’re doing with the wood.
Grouping George Nakashima’s The Soul of a Tree and Jim Krenov’s Worker in Wood with Nick Offerman’s Good Clean Fun might seem sacrilegious, but we like how the trio’s perspectives encompass the diverse spirit of woodworking. The older books combine photos of exceptional work with serious reflections on the nature of craftsmanship. Nick is equally passionate about wood and woodworking, but he’s more willing to admit that he’s enjoying himself–a good example for all of us to follow.

Once it’s discovered that these woodworking products are popular, then start setting up the business plan.  Many cities require licenses or permits in order to operate a business out of the home, so call the local business development office to determine if the area is zoned for a home business.  Then if the state charges sales tax, then get a sales tax certificate allowing the collection of taxes on the products, and set up an account with the state to remit the taxes collected.
A woodworking business may be a small home business that serves customers in the local area, or it can be a regional or national franchise. Stickley is an example of a woodworking business that started out locally in Central New York but has grown to become a nationally recognized furniture brand. Another example of a business that’s grown is National Woodwork, which is based in Pittsburgh but has clients in many states.
