We are in a good spot now and growth continues to happen at a steady pace. Summer is generally slow, but revenue on Etsy is still up 33% from this period last year. The business has been profitable for almost every month since starting, thanks to low costs. Etsy has been encouraging free shipping with a lot of pushback from sellers, but I built everything into our prices about a month ago and introduced free shipping shopwide, which seems to have improved conversion rates and search visibility already. We haven’t had any vendor shows since April, so 90% of sales are through Etsy at this time. The ecommerce portion of the website will be live by the time this interview is published, however. I’m also happily offering product photography services on the side now as well.
Build this handy stool in one hour and park it in your closet. You can also use it as a step to reach the high shelf. To make the storage shelves, all you need is a 4 ft. x 4 ft. sheet of 3/4-in. plywood, wood glue and a handful of 8d finish nails. Cut the plywood pieces according to the illustration. Spread wood glue on the joints, then nail them together with 8d nails. First, nail through the sides into the back. Then nail through the top into the sides and back. Finally, mark the location of the two shelves and nail through the sides into the shelves.
We’ve had some room to breathe and work on bigger projects this summer since we’re settled in our home. I do get contacted locally for larger, custom projects which I take on more throughout slow months - right now I’m working on a huge wedding backdrop. The shop is full of all sorts of table tops which will have more of a local focus since they’re tough to ship, but the steel table bases we’ve designed ship Canada and the US-wide so we’re excited to see that portion of the business grow and see where it takes us. My subcontractor is already knee deep in staining shelves in preparation for Christmas and I expect to double revenue in our two best months (October and November) simply by being incredibly prepared. It’s crazy how much business I lost last year just by not being able to keep up with demand - orders closed by mid-November!
Trust me – there are plenty of woodworking books out there. And when I say plenty, I mean decades of woodworking ideas and project publications. While there is plenty of good woodworking info in these “golden oldies”, most of them are lacking the modern advances and advantages of current-day woodworking. Woodworking has hugely evolved over the past couple of decades with the invention of advanced power tools, fresh ideas, online influencers, and more. Not too long ago, woodworking was solely a profession, not a hobby.

I admit it. I’m not a good daughter, every year I forget what I’ve got to do on Father’s Day. If you’re in the same boat I'm in, we’re together. So, I decided to make a humble bookmark made from wood which would look elegant and decent. You will need hardwood scraps; the measurement of bookmarks is about 7-in. x 1 3/16- in. Less effort, more appreciation!

Turn a single 3-ft. long, 1×12 hardwood board into some small shelves to organize a desktop or counter. Cut off a 21-in. long board for the shelves, rip it in the middle to make two shelves, and cut 45-degree bevels on the two long front edges with a router or table saw. Bevel the ends of the other board, cut dadoes — grooves cut into the wood with a router or a table saw with a dado blade — cross-wise (cut a dado on scrap and test-fit the shelves first!). Then cut it into four narrower boards, two at 1-3/8 in. wide and two at 4 in.

Women's watches were normally formed like, with a watch fob that was more attractive than defensive. Chains were frequently decorated with a silver or enamel pendant, often carrying the arms of some club or society, which by association also became known as a fob. Also common are clasps designed to be put through a buttonhole and worn in a jacket or waistcoat, this sort being frequently associated with and named after train conductors. An early reference to the pocket watch is in a letter in November 1462 from the Italian clockmaker Bartholomew Manfred to the Marches di Mantua Federico Gonzaga, where he offers him a "pocket clock" better than that belonging to the Duke of Modena. By the end of the 15th century, spring-driven clocks appeared in Italy, and in Germany. Peter Heinlein, a master locksmith of Nuremberg, was regularly manufacturing pocket watches by 1524. Thereafter, pocket watch manufacture spread throughout the rest of Europe as the 16th century progressed.

This book was useless to me. It did not have the details needed to assemble any of the projects. It gave you a material and cut list that was ok. Then to assemble the say attach A to C and no where in the book did it say what board was A or what was C. I'd love to send it back and get my money back. I would never suggest this book to any biginner. I was very disappointed from start to finish.

Having purchased this book, I would be remiss if I did not recommend it to other beginners. The book covers everything you would need or want to know about the basics of woodworking, including types of wood, tools, joining techniques, etc. Also, the book's layout is clear, containing rich photographs with text a layman can understand.I consider this book a great investment.

Being a complete beginner, the softback book is comprehensive and easy to follow, with many photos and illustrations covering wood types, hand and power tools, machines and how to set up a home workshop. Exploded examples of joinery and cabinetry give the book a real world usefulness which I have found lacking elsewhere. My only criticism would be the presentation style and illustrations are now a little dated especially as this edition is dated as a 2010 reprint of the original 1989 book, but only a little and not so much to detract from an otherwise excellent book. You really don't need another wood working or joinery book, and its great value too.
First, as most eager but hesitant potential hobbyists realize, you have to be much more thoughtful about tool selection. A 14-inch band saw? In your dreams, in a small space, you’re going to have to rely on bench-top or handheld tools. (It is possible to forgo power tools entirely in favor of hand tools, but that’s a discussion better left for another time).
When I began listing items on Etsy, I honestly had a really tough time with shipping. I had no clue what I was doing with packaging and many of my first international shipments arrived broken. (There are unsurprisingly no online tutorials for shipping awkward and fragile mountain shaped shelves!) I went above and beyond with customer service during these first few orders and refunded everything, apologized profusely, and somehow came out with no bad reviews.

The Wood Product manufacturing industry has turned a corner since the collapse of the housing market, driven by improving household income and a rebound in housing starts. However, the growing popularity of low-cost imports and competition from non-plastic substitutes will limit profit growth in the coming years. Nonetheless, expanding residential construction, falling unemployment and improving incomes will lead to strong growth for the industry.

This was written when 1/2 inch plywood was actually 1/2 inch thick. Eight pages on the obsolete radial arm saw, but no mention of a miter saw or pocket hole jigs. Very little about the router and router table. Many descriptions of little used joinery techniques. Bottom line, this book is painfully outdated and lacks any real instructions of how to do woodworking with modern tools and lack of practical techniques. Hard to believe they have printed the same 30 year old stuff 19 times and keep selling it. Now I understand why there is no "Look Inside" feature. Very disappointed.

I suspect that modern woodworking books like this one have been spoiled by easy photography: instead of describing the process, or providing diagrams that simplify the technique to just the relevant information, they select a few photographs and move on. Maybe that works for some people (and judging by the number of five-star reviews, *most* people), but it doesn't work for me.

Excellent book for those like me starting out in woodwork. Describes the different joints, tools and approach to woodworking in a clear concise way. I brought an older secondhand version, so I got the hardback for the same price as a paperback. I like this because I plan to use hand tools more, but the machine tool section is a bit dated in my copy. I can only assume its been updated in later versions.

Firstly, I separated the hoop and used the inside piece. Next I used my wood burning tool and burned specific designs onto the surface. Moving on, I repeat this task and used variety of wooden heads and burned designs into the surface of each one. Then, I used stretchy cord and strung my beads into a bracelet. From the picture, it may seem tricky, however, it is quite simple and a quick way to make your bracelets. You can even the design, on everything will be done per your decision. What more could you ask for? You can even use these for gifting purposes and your friends would adore such a cute gift from you! Share the piece if you liked it!

A hanging leather wood shelf has been on my to-do list for a long time and I was waiting to get started sooner as the result is of worth and useful. However, the biggest delay was finding the belts for this purpose. Has anyone of you discovered that thrift-shop leather belts are often overpriced? Something I wasn’t proud of at all. Regardless, a little patience assured worthy enough. Hence, what I found was: one super long thick black belt and a couple dark brown well-worn beauties. What I adore about this project is that a mixture of belts looks great, the more it is covered with wood, the better. Also, the whole structure is very easy to set up if steps are followed correctly. It will be all customized! Just give it a thought, you will be able to select your own designs and colors! I would love dealing with such interesting and fun tasks.

Like what others have said, no money can buy happiness or replacing your family by your side. I am 58 years old, I miss working side by side with my dad, on woodworking projects. He is still alive, at 85 years old, but suffers from a disease that prevents his woodworking abilities. I also can remember watching and later helping my grandfather in his shop, on his Shopsmith. I learned a lot, but at first, I was not that interested. I blew a lot of educational chances, that will never be available, again.

Fast forward to adult me. I’m a full-blown city girl whose idea of crafting mostly consists of small handheld tasks (i.e. jewelry making, crocheting, colouring books, etc.). I’ve completely forgotten about how much woodworking was a part of my childhood and how beautiful the work of it can be. Then NBC came out with what (in my humble opinion) is one of the greatest television shows ever created. Making It is a traditional competition style reality show that showcases the work of different crafts people from around the United States. They specialize in everything from paper crafting to (you guessed it) woodworking. Oh and it’s hosted by these two fabulous goofballs.

I have used this book on various projects. This book tells you HOW to work wood efficiently without getting caught up in the details of the actual techniques. It tells you in laymans terms (for the layman also) how to accout for expansion of wood, the differences in types of woods, and dimensional analysis of the average piece of furniture, etc...PROS** Touches on nearly all aspects of woodworking.** Tells you about the material that you are working with ... WOOD.** Detailed dimensions of the average "good feeling" piece of furniture. EX: Counter top height of kitchen base cabinet is generally 36"CONS** If you are the type of person who likes project books, this has none.
Bookends are an easy way to break up space and add character to any bookcase. These industrial bookends are simple to build; you’ll only need a drill and saw. Personalize them to your recipients taste with different species of wood, stain or even paint. We used oak, finished with a Golden Oak stain, and black steel parts. See the whole process here.
Most experts recommend that the business plan be put into place first, and generally that’s a great idea. However, before doing the business plan, make some of the products and see how they sell, and just how popular the product is because it may be a great fad for five minutes before the next hot product comes along, and the creator is stuck with hundreds of pieces that can’t be sold.
