Another thing I love about this woodworking book is the amount of information it covers. It goes over everything from setting up a workshop, choosing lumber, using power/hand tools, gluing, cutting, finishing, and more. If you’re looking for practical woodworking knowledge that will expand your skills and not overwhelm you, you’ll definitely want to consider this book!
I've only had the book for one day and briefly scanned the contents. After doing a DIY remodel which included installing hardwood floors, building a fireplace mantel, installing windows and doors successfully I realized I could do some incredible things If I could get a solid foundation in wood and wood working. This book does just that, gives me the foundation to become autonomous. This is a great addition to my growing Creative Home Owner books collection. I highly recommend.
Check out the top-rated review on Amazon if you’re on the fence: “I am by no means an experience[d] woodworker and this is the first time I have attempted dovetail joints. If the tool helps me make them successfully, then I am happy with and so I'm giving it a five-star recommendation. . . . I'm confident that with a few more cuts, I will get both perfect.” Read the rest of the review here.

Now that the products are gaining some popularity, start advertising the products on the internet, local trade magazines, bulletin boards in the local stores, and join the Chamber of Commerce. Create some flyers to hang on the neighbors doors (just don’t put them in the mailbox – only the postal service can do that, and there are stiff fines and penalties for doing this). Get some business cards made that helps identify the products being produced and hand them out everywhere – there are always opportunities to advertise a product – lines at the grocery store, Chamber of Commerce functions, friends at church, political gatherings, where ever there are people, it’s an opportunity to advertise the products.
I strongly considered adding Amazon Handmade as a selling platform, but in the end, I don’t think Amazon sits right with me in an ethical sense. I take pride in being high quality, local, and ethical with the business and would like to continue that no matter how big things get. This is why I’ll be pushing my own website this year and continuing to use all local suppliers as I grow.
Being a complete beginner, the softback book is comprehensive and easy to follow, with many photos and illustrations covering wood types, hand and power tools, machines and how to set up a home workshop. Exploded examples of joinery and cabinetry give the book a real world usefulness which I have found lacking elsewhere. My only criticism would be the presentation style and illustrations are now a little dated especially as this edition is dated as a 2010 reprint of the original 1989 book, but only a little and not so much to detract from an otherwise excellent book. You really don't need another wood working or joinery book, and its great value too.
A woodworking business can set itself apart from other wood shops by offering high-quality products at reasonable prices, and by educating customers about the crafting process. In-person conversations, pamphlets and even tags can be used to share with customers what work went into making a piece and why that piece is different from ones produced by competitors.
